  • Ideal range: 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C)

  • Tolerable range: Down to about 40°F (4°C) briefly; frost-sensitive

  • Not frost hardy: Prolonged cold below 32°F (0°C) can kill the plant.

  • Full sun to partial shade

  • In hotter regions (zones 11+), light afternoon shade helps prevent sunburn on stems.


💧 Humidity and Rainfall

  • Moderate humidity preferred

  • Can tolerate seasonal drought, but needs regular water during flowering and fruiting

  • Well-drained soil is essential; root rot is a risk in waterlogged conditions

    Native range (Northern South America & Central America):

    • Indigenous to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and parts of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, and Trinidad & Tobago 

    • Typically thrives in tropical riparian forests, often growing epiphytically on trees or on rocky terrain 

    Introduced and commercial cultivation:

    • Expanded into Central America and the Caribbean, as well as Southeast Asia (e.g., Thailand, Vietnam) and Australia 

    • Now commercially grown in Mexico, Israel, United States (notably Florida, California, and Hawaii) and European greenhouses, with significant production in Colombia dominating exports
